Job Description

The candidate will be responsible for patrolling the college facilities and properties, providing protection and service to ensure a safe and secure environment for faculty, staff, students and visitors. The STCC Police Department is a service intensive, community-policing agency.

Essential Functions, Duties, And Responsibilities

  • Patrol buildings, grounds and adjacent areas of a state educational institution by foot, bicycle, or patrol vehicle.
  • Enforce state laws as well as the rules and regulations of the institution; restrain or arrest suspects when necessary.
  • Investigate incidents/crimes and handle appropriately including related paperwork.
  • Provide assistance to courts or grand juries in the prosecution of cases.
  • Enforce college and department policies, rules and regulations, local laws, Massachusetts General Laws, and federal laws.
  • Exercise police powers by making arrests, searching persons, and/or restraining and transporting violent persons; advise suspects of their constitutional rights to prosecute violators and to prevent further violations of law.
  • Investigate crimes by interviewing witnesses, victims and others; mediate disputes; preserve crime scenes for examination by experts.
  • Enforce campus traffic and safety regulations by directing traffic; assisting operators of disabled motor vehicles; assisting pedestrians in crossing streets; writing traffic tickets; inspecting licenses, permits and registrations for validity; and ensuring an orderly flow of traffic during snow removal or sanding.
  • Operate equipment, such as but not limited to two-way radios, base stations, public address system, emergency medical equipment, office machines, firearms and riot control equipment.
  • Perform related duties such as cooperating and sharing information with other agencies; notifying designated personnel of emergencies; writing activity reports, daily logs, and investigative reports; maintaining records on lost-and-found items, criminal records and files on known criminals; assisting in the evacuation of community members in fire drills; assisting in fire-fighting operations; and raising and lowering flags.
  • Provide emergency medical assistance.
  • Provide assistance to courts or grand juries in prosecution cases.
  • Work during periods of inclement weather, hurricanes, and blizzards, natural and manmade disasters.
  • Perform occasional mandatory overtime, details, and campus dispatch and switchboard operator duties.
  • Promote community policing and community engagement in all tasks and duties.
  • Participate in community engagement and continually offer exceptional customer service to the entire STCC community and surrounding areas.
  • Focus on the Commonwealth's Equity Agenda by applying related best practices throughout all job functions.
  • Perform other duties as assigned, consistent with the Collective Bargaining Agreement.

Requirements

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS AND REQUIREMENTS:

  • Possession of a current and valid Massachusetts Class D motor vehicle operator's license or another state equivalent.
  • Must possess a Massachusetts Class A License to Carry a firearm (M.G.L. 140 Sec. 131).
  • Eligibility for Certification by the Massachusetts POST commission (Chapter 253 of the Acts of 2020 - Police Reform Bill).
  • Completed or ability to complete an MPTC approved Full-Time Academy; STCC police will arrange for attendance at a MPTC approved academy provided all other required qualifications are met (Contractual stipulations apply).
  • High School Diploma required.
  • Ability to prepare written reports of investigations, maintain accurate records and analyze data.
  • Ability to follow and provide effective oral and written instructions in a precise, understandable manner.
  • Ability to exercise sound judgment; maintain calm manner in stressful situations; make decisions and act quickly in emergency/dangerous situations, and maintain confidential information.
  • Ability to interface professionally with a diverse public.
  • Ability to walk alone for long periods of time both indoors and out under varying climate conditions.
  • Knowledge of the principles & correct usage of the English language, including grammar/punctuation/spelling.
  • Ability to apprehend non-compliant and compliant offenders who break the law.
  • Ability to work harmoniously with all other members of the department.
  • Ability to perform duties with or without reasonable accommodation.
  • First Aid/CPR AED Certified or ability to become certified upon employment.
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills and attention to detail are essential.
  • Ability to pass extensive background investigation, including CORI & SORI checks.
  • Applicant must be able to undergo and successfully pass police entry level physical and psychological exams.
  • Ability to work in partnership with a diverse faculty, student, and staff population.
  • REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS:


Must be able to meet the requirements of Chapter 253 of the Acts of 2020 (Police Reform Bill)*:

  • Candidates must be 21 years of age at the time of hire.
  • Minimum of a high school diploma or equivalent.
  • Successful completion of a Municipal Police Training Committee (MPTC)-approved basic training program.
  • All candidates must complete Peace Officer Standards and Training Commission (POST) -approved physical and psychological fitness evaluation.
  • As a condition of employment, candidate must pass a state and national background check.
  • All final candidates must pass an examination approved by POST.
  • Possess and maintain first aid and CPR certificates.
  • All final candidates must successfully complete an interview administered by POST.
  • Good moral character and fit for employment in law enforcement as determined by POST.

Preferred Qualifications

  • POST approved full time academy. Prior experience in Campus Law Enforcement. Associates Degree or higher in Criminal Justice.

Salary: Before Training anticipated salary range $51,201.80 - $55,857.88. After Training anticipated salary range $53,970.02 - $59,048.08. Salary range subject to Collective Bargaining Agreement (CBA).
