An exciting opportunity exists for an entry-level Fish and Wildlife Biologist to join a team of employees within the Wildlife and Habitat Management Section of the Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission (FWC). FWC’s North Central Region is seeking a motivated applicant that is willing and able to work outdoors in a variety of conditions throughout the year in fulfillment of their job responsibilities. Primary responsibilities will include assisting with the planning, development and implementation of habitat management programs to maintain and perpetuate native wildlife populations on t he Jennings, Cary, Ralph E. Simmons, Four Creeks, and Belmore Wildlife Management Areas (WMAs) in cooperation with the lead agency, Florida Forest Service and assisting with management on Camp Blanding WMA and other WMAs in the district.

 

Description of Duties –

  • Provides recommendations to the lead agency’s area manager and assists where possible to implement effective and cost-efficient projects that maintain or enhance wildlife habitat, such as food plots, prescribed burning, exotic plant control, and mechanical treatments.
  • Implements public hunt programs, including facilitating public access, assisting hunters and other public users, and coordinating with the lead agency regarding the administration of hunting opportunities and area-specific hunting regulations.
  • Assists with developing bid specifications, overseeing contracts, and monitoring vendor compliance.
  • Assists with annual work plans, budget proposals, accomplishment reports, and other administrative tasks.
  • Assists with public hunting and other recreational activities, including coordination and operation of check stations and supervising check station operators.
  • Conducts population surveys of wildlife species using scientifically accepted techniques, including data analysis and report writing .
  • Surveys habitat types and monitors changes that take place in vegetative communities.
  • Accurately and routinely submits reports of activity and accomplishments using online databases and ArcGIS.
  • Provides supervisor with information, recommendations and justification for regulations governing public use on the WMA based on sound biological and sociological principles.
  • Provides technical assistance to individuals, organizations and other agencies regarding wildlife biology and wildlife habitat management.
  • Participates in seminars and workshops relating to wildlife resource management.
  • Responds to nuisance bear complaints, reports of road killed bears, and other wildlife issues within assigned area.
  • Assists the Camp Blanding WMA Biologist with prescribed fire operations, nuisance animal issues, and check station operation as needed.
  • Completes other duties or assists on other areas as assigned.

 

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:

  • Knowledge of wildlife biology, assessment and inventory of wildlife and habitat, collection and analysis of biological data.
  • Knowledge of habitat restoration and management techniques, fire ecology, and plant succession.
  • Ability to write, edit, and produce scientific reports and summaries. 
  • Ability to serve as a prescribed burn team crew member and safely apply fire to vegetative communities.
  • Ability to use and maintain area equipment such as farm tractors and implements, ATVs, chainsaws, mowers, and pumps.
  • Ability to use Microsoft Office applications (Word, Outlook, Excel) and learn to use internal agency software/databases.
  • Knowledge of GIS software (ArcMap, ArcPro) and handheld GPS units and their applications.
  • Ability to organize work assignments and set priorities.
  • Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with others.

Level of Education – Preferred Bachelor of Science degree with a major in one of the life or biological sciences, or a Master of Science degree in one of the biological sciences . Four years of directly related professional experience can substitute for the required Bachelor of Science degree.

Other Requirements: Employment is contingent upon successful completion of a background check. Must possess and maintain a valid minimum Class E State of Florida driver’s license. Occasional overnight travel is required.
