Experienced Bilingual Union Organizer

Based in Washington, DC

UNITE HERE Local 25 represents over 7,000 hotel, restaurant and casino workers in the Washington, D.C. metropolitan area and has been fighting for justice in the hospitality industry for over 80 years. Our members are predominantly women, people of color and immigrants. We are currently seeking applications for the position of Experienced Bilingual Organizer , with at least three years of organizing experience.

Organizers are responsible for recruiting, training, and developing rank-and-file leaders. Organizers also work to increase the participation and mobilization of the union’s membership for large-scale action to organize non-union workers, fight for higher wages and better benefits, and increase the rights of hotel workers across the metro area.

Duties and Responsibilities:

1. Conducting broad and intensive outreach efforts to non-union workers;
2. Building one-on-one relationships with workers and establishing trust;
3. Identifying, recruiting and training leaders to guide and lead their campaign;
4. Regularly participate in house visits and shop visits;
5. Conducting individual and group committee meetings with workers to discuss and plan organizing campaigns;
6. Motivating individual workers and groups of workers to take collective public action;
7. Working to involve community allies in organizing campaigns;
8. Engaging workers in broader union efforts to bring pressure to bear on the industry as a whole.

Qualifications Required:

1. At least 3 years of organizing experience -- union organizing preferred, but consideration also given for tenant and community organizing experience.
2. Candidates must be bilingual in Spanish and English.
3. Ability to motivate and inspire others.
4. Ability to communicate effectively, respectfully, and comfortably with people from diverse backgrounds.
5. Ability to learn quickly and grow into positions of greater responsibility.
6. Ability to multitask, work efficiently, and be well-organized, and to make and follow through on work plans.
7. Resourcefulness and talent for problem-solving.
8. Basic writing and computer skills.
9. Ambition to take initiative and responsibility for assigned projects.
10. Ability to pay close attention to detail.
11. Extra consideration will be given to candidates with experience working in the hotel, restaurant, hospitality, or other service industries.

Salary and Benefits
Annual salary range is $55,000 – $65,000, depending on relevant experience.
